I know it's of scant (or no) comfort to those involved, but the fact that such an incident (still) makes national headlines is an indication of how safe (we think) the railways really are.
You'd need a crash on the roads involving the death & dismemberment of a dozen kids and a convent of nuns to generate similar "newsworthiness".

Boys in orange definitely out in numbers today, and everyone to a man raised an arm when train horn was blown. You usually get the odd arm raised but today everyone did.

The line was recently made bi-directional, that’s the main thing.
Did the staff get briefed on the change?
Staff get more complacent as they get older.

Cough Correct dets are placed in emergency scenarios to warn the driver of an incident ahead, or to assist with a failed unit. Been all over Kent today driving and the amount of track workers out number in the hundreds. It wouldn’t be possible to put dets down for every worksite. It would sound like the blitz

wouldn't have happened if they were still driving Class 31, 37 or 56 - you could have heard them locos from 10 miles away
modern traction is quiet for environmental reasons - bring back English noisey machinery

I don't think that would work, detonators are there to tell the driver to stop immediately, there's a problem ahead, faulty signal or something like that?
Westham67 would know better

Audible wouldn't cut it though. It would have to be visible or physical.

Do they still put detonators on the track to give an audible warning? I would trust that over a bloke who may or may not be paying attention.

You would hope that they wouldn't be allowed to have phones with them, though there will always be someone who doesn't follow the rules. I'm sure spotting is a boring job and they get distracted.

Must admit I'd never even heard of the concept of a touch lookout until today.
What's the maximum distance that the touch lookout stands from the worker with hearing protection? In this case is the touch lookout unable to hear the horn due to the noise of the works?
If I was working with power tools and needed hearing protection I'd sure as shit make sure that a touch lookout was on point all the time.
The outer lookout on his fucking smartphone is my wild stab in the dark.

This has me thinking that they need some kind of buzzer they can feel when there's a train in the area. It would vibrate and flash like those things they give you in some restaurants to tell you to go and get your food. It could be triggered by the train passing through a signal or by an attentive look out.

The touch lookout is looking at the outer lookout so 1 of them fucked up. My guess would be the touch lookout because 1 man didn't die, he saw the train and dived off the track too late to save the others anyway

Again something that should not be happening all brakes on all types of trains including track mounted machinery should be fail safe it the brakes fail they lock and the wagon cannot move
